INTRO

Do you have experience in software development for energy control systems and want to help drive the energy transition? Spectral, a system integration and smart energy services company in Amsterdam, is looking for an (energy control) systems integration developer to join the existing development team. If you can bring talent and enthusiasm, we can offer the opportunity to be a part of a game-changing team working on high-performance microgrids, smart building applications, energy control systems, and other tech solutions to drive the energy transition.

ABOUT SPECTRAL

Spectral develops technical solutions that help propel the evolution of smart energy networks. We are involved across the whole grid, whether it’s a community, building, energy farm, neighborhood, or all at the same time! Some areas we focus on include: improving asset efficiency, unlocking the value of energy storage, facilitating demand flexibility, and locally produced renewable energy. All to propel the evolution of smart energy networks and accelerate the global transition towards a 100% renewable, clean energy supply. We believe that one of the most urgent issues is to solve the challenges for providing for our energy needs in a sustainable way. You can find out more about Spectral’s mission here.

YOUR ROLE

Spectral is seeking an energy control systems developer to join our Smart Energy Systems team. You will work closely with data scientists, software developers, and power systems engineers on integrating robust control systems to optimize energy assets such as renewable energy power plants and battery storage systems.

An example project that you could be working on:

Virtual Power Plant platform – a turn-key solution that enables intelligent management of grid networks, distributed energy resources (DERs), and energy storage. The platform enables many DERs to be aggregated into a virtual power plant which can be deployed for the provision of energy services, such as frequency regulation. The total integrated system includes numerous components, such as embedded energy management systems, device communication interfaces, advanced control, and optimization algorithms, physical/cyber security systems, data processing services, user interfaces (both embedded and cloud-based), sensors, and measurement systems.

Your tasks might include:

  • Designing and developing control algorithms and data logging interfaces enabling cloud-based control and monitoring (e.g. for multi-asset microgrids)
  • Liaising with our power systems engineers on designing and implementing local-level controllers for a wide range of energy management functions (e.g. for wind farms in combination with large-scale energy storage)
  • Working with our team and third parties to develop integrated system designs, including the definition of functional requirements, design of the control architecture, and specification of communication protocols and/or device interfaces.
  • Contributing to cutting-edge innovation and R&D projects which push the boundaries of the current state of the art in smart-grids and energy management technologies.

YOUR PROFILE

You should have a background in control systems engineering, smart-grid technology, or a comparable specialization. You should have strong practical familiarity with the domain of systems integration and mission-critical systems.

We’re looking for someone who is innovative and passionate about applying technology to find optimal solutions, solving complex challenges, and is capable of adaptively working with different programming languages and frameworks.

You should have high attention to detail, be a proactive problem solver and work well in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Most of all, we’re looking for someone who is highly motivated to join us on our mission to accelerate the sustainable energy transition. Our team is highly international and based in Amsterdam North. Fluency in written and spoken English is a must and Dutch language skills are a definite bonus. The role is full-time.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

  • 3+ years’ relevant professional work experience
  • Practical experience with systems integration and implementing mission-critical control systems and related principles such as redundancy, high uptime, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with developing control and optimization algorithms, including both classical and modern control techniques, such as PID and model predictive control (MPC)
  • Experience with industry communication protocols including Modbus, OPC UA, IEC 61850

DESIRED SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and relevant hardware components
  • Previous experience within the energy industry, with a strong understanding of power systems and renewable energy, and energy storage technologies
  • Preferably, a track record of implementations using technologies such as Linux, Python, C#, time-series databases, and/or automated test tools
  • Familiarity with information security and related standards such as ISO 27001
  • Fluency in English; strong written and verbal communication skills
