Functie omschrijving

The Biotechnology & Society group of Delft University of Technology is looking for a PhD candidate for a project on designing inclusive value chains for maritime biofuels production (CLEAN SHIPPING), which is carried out in collaboration with industrial partners. The shipping industry is in direct need of clean and sustainable fuels. This project addresses the design and sustainability assessment of full value chains to produce shipping biofuels from local biobased feedstocks to technological requirements (conceptual process design and modelling) to the final distribution and use.

CLEAN SHIPPING focusses on major social, environmental and technical issues in the transition to design inclusive biobased value chains for maritime biofuels, and it also seeks to develop new business models to overcome these issues. To ensure the sustainable production of maritime biofuels, we aim to develop conceptual process designs and supply chain designs along with their sustainability assessment (techno-economic evaluation, environmental impacts assessment and social impacts analysis) while considering the local context.

The project involves case-studies for different feedstocks in Africa and South-America. Based on technical, environmental and social indicators, this project seeks to develop an integrated sustainability assessment that will lead to robust and viable biobased value chains.

The research will be conducted in close collaboration with a variety of biobased industry and shipping industry partners. The project is part of a Responsible Innovation project which also involves another PhD-candidate focussing on the development of added value in feedstock production for local communities, a postdoc focussing on technical fuel aspects (at a different TU Delft research group) and a postdoc focussing on sustainable business models for feedstock production.

Intended starting date is Dec 1, 2020
