PhD on Bitumen Chemometrics
Challenge: Prediction and optimization of bitumen properties
Change: Multivariate analysis and AI techniques
Impact: Contributing to sustainable and circular materialsJob description
Research into material ageing is crucial to deal with ageing infrastructure and the growing pressure on the lack of natural resources. Bituminous materials are widely used in paving and sealant applications, and generally have a high potential for reuse. On the other hand, modified binding materials (bio-binders, polyurethane, epoxy, rubber-modified binders) are being considered as sustainable alternatives for asphalt bitumen or used for enhancing the mechanical performance of asphalt concrete pavements. The effects of using these alternative materials on the long-term mechanical performance of asphalt concrete pavements and the rate at which their performance degrades (due to environmental ageing) is not yet known. To achieve a circural economy in bituminous applications while avoiding perfomance losses, a detailed material characterization is crucial in order to develop effective additives to compensate for the ageing effects of bituminous binders and to predict long-term mechanical perfomance at the design phase.
The aim of this research project is to develop a robust experimental methodology based on physicochemical and mechanical characterization methods to characterize bituminous materials under complex environmental conditions. Furthermore, multivariate analysis and AI techniques will be used to develop models for predicting material properties in relation to material composition, durability and other relevant physical parameters.
This project will be part of a larger research programme ‘Knowledge-based Pavement Engineering 2021-2024’, funded by Rijkswaterstaat, the executive agency of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in the Netherlands. During the project you will interact with other researchers and experts at the Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research (TNO) and Rijkswaterstaat.Requirements
